What are meta tags in web design?

Meta tags are HTML elements that provide metadata about a web page. They are placed within the <head> section of the HTML document and are not visible to the user on the web page itself. Some of the common meta tags used in web design include:

  • Title tag - Specifies the title of the web page, displayed in the browser's title bar or tab
  • Description tag - Provides a brief summary of the web page's content, used by search engines
  • Keywords tag - Lists relevant keywords associated with the web page's content
  • Viewport tag - Defines the viewport settings for responsive web design
  • Robots tag - Provides instructions to search engine craw
